Bavani la namma pasanga iruntha wing 3rd floor wing known as D8 wing had sri(AJS), gokul(PR), karthi (namma rep the one), mayil, gethu, shankar, jayaraj, amit avlo thannu nenaikkaren...VJ(PR) and akshay will be in this wing if they are in hostel.. our room was positioned on the way and that became the room to drop the note books before lunch and even more important we had PLATES... Kadaisiya sem exams... 5 mins da... Thanks to everyone who woke me up after every 5 mins again and again... avasarama books xerox pottuttu... full night pottalum syllabus mudikkama marudhamalai murgan and gct vinayagar pathukkuvarnu... night 2 manikku coffee and varukki saptuttu... idhu petrol bunk illaingannu namma college board la irukkara MAK pathu kekkaravangalakku sollittu... ore shirt and pant ella exam kum pottuttu poi ezhudhi epdio pass aayachi... Practicals mattum illenna my % would have gone down by atleast 5%...

Odyssey(generate all combination of a string) and SSQ (King of SSQ).. IQ night outs, mokka padam after IQ and treats after that... Namma college ku vezhia CIT has a special place in my college life and it started with Interface 06 and continued for next three years and for many off-campus interviews... CIT interface was always colorful ;)

These are the things that came on top of my mind... Second year mudinji stepping into important placement year.. 3rd year...

Endhiran - The Robot

First time in my life, I saw a movie on the first day. 01/10/10 9 PM show in Fame Shankarnag. I was expecting not to hear any dialogue as it was first day and Rajni movie after almost 3 years. But It started with a huge noise and then it went on noiseless. It was not a typical Rajni movie with punch dialogues and story revolving around rajni. I would say its a good Rajni movie after Padayappa.

Special effects were the highlight of the movie, Most of the movie has cg and especially the climax where multiple rajni forming formations was handled well. Director Shankar has taken note of the minutest details in the movie, but for some flaws like entire police force going after Robo just because he/it kidnapped Sana (Robo to sana - "Manushan padaichadhulaye urupidiyana rende vishayangal — onnu naa innonu nee...” This dialogue was very true for Aish in this movie)

The first half was very good and didn't get the feeling that 90 mins are passed but the second half was stretched unnecessarily and I started yawning till the climax chase started. Its a good movie to watch and is lot better than chandramuki/sivaji.

And for the last 2 movies Rajni is Computer Science grad. I am a proud CS Engineer :)

Above are the 6 Novels written by Isaac Asimov who has coined famous 3 laws of robotics that you will see at the beginning of I Robot movie.

I read the entire series in a span of month. This is the first set of novels that I read in the Sci-Fi section. It has definitely made me to read more in this genre. I always think that cartoons and novels best way to stretch your imaginations beyond the limit. This series definitely is the one that will stretch to a great limit.

This is more like a series of journey of a planet from its inception to its final evolution (similar to middle earth in LOTR)

I would also recommend to read Prelude at the end as it is the order it is written and it will help you to recollect some of the incidents that happens in other novel when you read the prelude.

Silver Jubilee

Last week I completed 25 years of existence in the planet earth.
Looking back, I could see most of the milestones that I crossed. Just like in the video game mario some gave me extra powers and others reduced my powers. I am still in the game, but I am not sure If I have ball power, am tall and how many more chances before I rescue the princess or the game gets over.
Let me just list some important milestones that I reached and the ones that I missed.

1. Writing the diploma entrance exam.
This is the single instance that altered the entire course of my life. It opened a new direction for me to go. It seems that I was destined to do my diploma. I got state first in it and this was not there the year before and was canceled year after. I have decided not to become a doctor as I was not that comfortable in seeing at blood. So I decided that I will become an engineer and opted for diploma.

2. Diploma in Computer Technology.
I was first exposed to the power of computers and programming here. First year I was bemused by the computers. My friends from Non-CT dept. who used to teach me how to do mkdir and dir commands. It all changed when I was assigned a computer of my own and I was taught C. Best thing about diploma is that we had 4 semesters and each had 1 programming language and all of the semesters had afternoon reserved for lab. I loved programming a lot. It was cool to make computers do things by itself.

3. GCT.
I got admitted to GCT one of the top colleges in Tamil Nadu. I am not sure If I would have scored in the entrance exam to reach GCT had I gone for Higher secondary. GCT is where I learned a lot about Computer SCIENCE. Earlier I was just a programmer. College helped me to mature to the next level. Best part of GCT is the friends that I got. I can say that I now know ppl who are from almost all parts of the TN and I now know ppl who are in different continents :-)

4. Yahoo.
I bleed purple. 4 years at yahoo.

But I missed some important things as well.
1. HSC Mathematics & Physics - I am sure I am going to miss this for my life If I am not going to pick it up sooner or later (atleast the math). This is the one big thing that I lost as I went for my diploma.

2. Sports - I now realize that I should have played some games which would have increased my physical strength a bit. I realized a big fact only after I joined GCT for my UG. "It does not matter much if you are top only in academic ranking and not that great in other areas. It would be great if you could get 80+ in your courses and concentrate on other areas as well".

3. Satisfied with Yahoo.
Here I am not speaking about the current work. It is after getting the yahoo offer in college. I should have atleast prepared for the Higher studies. It might have altered my career altogether.

Now I am here probably in the cross roads.. Let me see what will be my next milestone..

June 26th 2006 - The Park Hotel, Bangalore. My Induction program Addressed by Venkat Panchapikesan (then CEO of Bangalore). First meals in a star hotel.
Next 15 days - Campus to College Orientation @ Zero G Pub. I still remember flashes of those days. Many who joined with me moved on to other company or for their higher studies.

When I look back now and think what made me to stay back?
1. Work culture in yahoo!
2. Challenging work that is given to me.

Hope this bond will continue...

Sachin dethrones Anwar

One record that I always wanted someone to break was Saeed Anwar's 194 against India. I just wanted it to be broken by anyone but not scoring against India. I always thought Sachin/Shewag can beat that record.

Even in the recent match against Australia I was expecting him to beat the record and win the match. But Sachin got out at 175 and we lost the match as the last 3 wickets could not get 19 runs.

24/2/2010 (Full Scorecard) - At last Sachin broke the record and that too against South Africa - One of the best cricket teams in the world. It was a pleasure to watch the record broken. And there was no reaction from him on breaking this long holding record. He seems to have determined to reach 200. Even after reaching 200 - there was not much of celebration. Just the usual thanks to almighty - up in the sky.

And he wants this 200 to be dedicated to Indian people and expects another Indian to break this record. Expecting Sachin to break his record soon.

Video Lectures

When I was searching for Calculus class videos, I found few sites that are quite good.

Khan Academy - One of the sites that I found to be very useful. Has a wide coverage of topics (Basic to Intermediate levels). The site deals with basics of many areas like mathematics, chemistry, biology etc. I have seen few videos related to calculus and it helped me to refresh my calculus. (All of the videos are hosted in youtube).

Most of the US universities have some classes published online. MIT had some interesting videos as well. I haven't searched other universities' channels.

Though there are lots of resources available on the net, I don't find time and motivation to view them all. May be you will get them. Happy Viewing & Learning!

is the expenditure from my side to watch this movie. Is the movie really worth it? No, it isn't.

Rajnikanth - Just showing this man's name itself evokes applause from the entire theater even if it was displayed as surname for the producer.

The movie is about misadventures of 3 guys in Goa. It started off well and was going fine for first 30 minutes (till they reach GOA). Then the movie started to get boring. By the interval I realized that It was a wise decision not to have gone for some multiplex where the tickets are 150+. My friend consoled me that 2nd half might be thrilling and its about one of their girlfriends getting murdered (based on some real incident in goa). Second half proved worse than the first half and scenes were added just to drag the movie longer.

The movie had 8-10 songs and less scenes that evoked laughter. It might have been given A certificate for scenes related to gay sex(and they have a song for 2 guys ;-))

It is better not to waste the time and money on this movie.

Everyone who have known me long(atleast a year) will identify my watch by seeing it (timex vista). It came to me as a gift from my mother for getting first rank in my 9th standard. It was part of my journey from then on.

It has seen my tenth board exams, my polytechnic, my college and yahoo. It was with me as a trusted friend for the past 2 + 3 + 3 + 3.5 ~12 years doing what It was supposed to do as a watch. Yes showing TIME. Few months back I started to doubt my friend and started double checking with my mobile phone. Since It cannot be repaired anymore, I have decided to move on. yes to a fastrack watch.

My sister gifted me a fastrack army collection watch from her first month's salary. Hope it will me a memorable gift.

(One thing, I started doubting my old watch only after 11 years. But the fastrack is bit fast.. I had to doubt it from the day one. It already started running half an hour slow. Hope its a minor problem and will be fixed tomorrow when I take it to service center)
Update: The watch's mechanical instrument was replaced and is working fine now.

One more year is about to complete. Let me take some time to look at 09. I don't have a great memory to remember what are the important events that happened around the world and I am lazy to look at the old news. This post concerns only about my 2009 and nothing more but something less as there are things that I don't you to read. But If you are interested in the things that happened in 2009 please take a look at 2009 review and 2009 India. (I still bleed purple ;-))

Coping with change is not that easy. "Who moved my cheese!" is really a good book. But in real sniffing the change was not that easy or I was not sniffing properly. Whatever be the reason I had to go to a new project ant that too in JAVA - One language that I did not like it from college. Just because I had to remember a lot of class names and they are CaseSensitive and no IDE. Only lab exam where I did not get the output in the college. But after-all java with IDE is not that difficult. And I started working oozie an open source hadoop sub-project.

I lost my Moto Razr in a crowded bus 201, 3rd to loose a phone in 201 in my team. I still think that Moto Razr is the best phone to have. Stylish look, multiple alarms that can be set, missed call and message reminders until you see them and a 1.2 Mp camera. I sorely missed it and got it replaced by a nokia phone which is serving its purpose till date.

I got my first bike Honda Shine 125CC. I have decided to get a bike after I lost my phone. I thought of getting TVS Star or Hero Honda splendor. But my friends persuaded me to go for a bit bigger bike and I settled for Honda Shine. It remains a loyal companion to me carrying me safely for I am still not a very good driver. Shine cost me around 50K on road with all the accessories and helmet. I chose not to go for disc brakes/alloy wheels as they went above my budget of 50K.

I started to learn driving in the nights after 10 PM. My room mate Balaji taught me to drive. Thanks to him and there was no major incidents or accidents but for few chases by the street dogs. Stopped going to gym which I started in Jan 09. I stopped as I wanted my body not to be tired to drive and vowed to restart after I learnt driving. But priorities changed meanwhile and the desire for PhD was rekindled in me after I learnt that one of my senior from GCT and in Yahoo is going for his MS. I have to start the GYM in Jan 10. And no pay hike in 2009.

I started driving to office. It served 2 purposes. I reached and left office early to avoid traffic(7 AM to 4 PM). This also gave time to prepare for GRE in the evenings. I atleast felt that coming early to home left with a lot of time at my disposal. Sudden change of my office schedule went under the guise of avoiding traffic.

Nothing much... Preparing for GRE in a slow pace. Though it had some impact on my performance at office. I was ready to take the risk.

My sister got a job in Chennai. My mentor in Yahoo for 3 years Sidd has decided to relocate to sunnyvale. I shortlisted and applied for 7 universities. 7 was the initial plan and then I thought to reduce it to 6. Then I came to know my UG rank was 7. 7 seems to have something special to me. (I liked harry potter which had 7 parts and I have read all 7 parts thrice. My 2nd school is 7th day Adventist School. I am not superstitious. But I will accept I there were a random coincidence)

Overall in 2009 I took few bold and risky steps. I took a step towards a new direction. Though it could prove costly with a lot of opportunity cost. I have decided to give it a try. Let dawn of new year bring hope with it. (I am reading LOTR now for 2nd time)

myCollege - diff(gct2006, gct2009)

I recently went to my Alma mater Government College of Technology thrice in a month regarding my transcripts and recommendation letters. There were quite a few differences from the GCT that I knew and the present one. Both good and bad.

Good:

ATM and a proper SBI branch within the campus.
Most of the steps in the college are getting replaced with ramps to make it more accessible for specially abled.
Internet in our department is working and girls hostel has got net connectivity.
Department is Moving towards Linux.
Getting more green.
GCT Vinayagar temple is renovated.
Valar, Purush still remembers me and Shan forgot me ;-)
Professors have gct.ac.in IDs.

Bad:

Placements were not even started even after completion of one semester.
NO SMOKING signs everywhere inside the college campus. I don't think GCT'ians require a sign saying not to smoke inside the college.
No Internet to boys hostel and the reason is "Pasanga Kettu poiduvangalam"
70 rs Auto fare to go to GCT from Gandhipuram.

But still It is good to go back to college after a long time. Planning to go to IQ 10. Hope all of the juniors get placed by then.

GRE Prep from ETS

I just wanted to share some of the lessons that I learned hard way and some tips before I forget.

General

Start early preparation
Book in advance
Try out the PowerPrep software they give. Take practice tests. This will give you an idea about the interface that you will expect.
Remember that the order of sections is not fixed. Mostly essay will be first. 2nd can be either quants or verbal. (In my 2nd test I got a math section when I was expecting a vocabulary section and It took me 4 mins to solve the first problem just because my mind was tuned for vocab section which came after essay in my first attempt)
Identify the universities that you want to send your scores. The universities are to be selected at the end of the test. It would be better to know the place where the university is also (I selected CMU silicon valley instead of CMU Pittsburgh)

Verbals

Start preparing while your are in your Under graduation, there won't be time after you start working.
Barrons wordlist should be enough most of the times.
And I saw most of the words for the first time in my life, I dont know if I will use any of those later also.
I used to make clues for each word for remembering. The clues can be in english or any other language that you know. Stupider and funnier the clue the longer you will remember. But it is impossible to find stupid clues for 3500 words. So just try to remember as many clues as possible.
REVISE, REVISE....... as many times as you can.
I found just glancing over the entire word list on the morning of the exam very helpful. Also I found the 5 pm exam time convenient as I had time to revise once and go to exam center.

Quants

This should be relatively easy.
Refresh mathematics, R.S Agarwal Quants book etc.
Write the required Math formula etc during the instruction time of exam.
Identify the pages where you want to do your math work and split it into cells of 4 or 6 per page and number them from 1to 30 and use the space for that question only. Though this is trivial, It prevents you from getting lost when you switch your view between computer screen and the worksheet.
Also for Quantitative comparison just compare don't get carried away to solve the variable.

Essay

I wrote once and got scores which exceeded my expectations a lot.

Mostly no special preparation is required.
Speaking is bit difficult, so practice before going.
There is a free TOEFL sample questions and one online sample exam when you book. Take both.
Practice speaking by recording your speech and hearing it.
TOEFL is conducted mostly on saturday and sunday. So book in advance. Also you have to select the universities while booking itself. But this can be changed a day or two before your test based on your GRE performance if required.
Also reading is to read a passage and answer the questions after that. NOT reading aloud. One of the test taker started reading aloud when I gave the test and disturbed the entire center. Please dont do it.

I am trying to go back to college to learn more and get a PhD. To fulfill my dream of being a research scientist. First question that everyone ask me is why this decision after three years of work? The short answer is, I wanted my career to be in research rather than in development. PhD will enable to learn something in depth. I read a quote "A PhD grad is someone who knows something about everything and everything about something in his/her field".

I was not aware of the importance about Graduate studies when I was in college. Got placed in CTS and got double placed in Yahoo with a fat package. I was more than satisfied. I always liked challenges and Yahoo gave me some of the tough challenging problems that I faced ever, to solve. There was no room for me to think about higher studies till the time the module on which I was working was shelved and I was moved to a different project. I just wanted to try my luck that year and gave GRE and got 1230. I thought I will prepare well next year well and give the test. But again I was involved in another interesting project. Somewhere around June I came to know about my college senior and colleague is going to Brown University for his MS. This rekindled my dream of getting PhD and I started preparing seriously (I will post my GRE and TOEFL experiences in forthcoming posts).

Though I could not get a high scores in GRE, many friends mentioned that GRE is not an important factor for PhD especially for people with industrial experience. Taking the advice from them I am applying for my PhD in few of the top universities. Though it is highly competitive to get into these universities, I have decided to leave yahoo only if I get from top university. Spending 5 years of my life should be worth it.
